Build your own website from scratch.
By Jorge Blanco

1. Define Mission / Objectives (If you have absolutely no idea what the website will be about).

It has happened to me too, you (or in this case I) have an itch for building a new website, the problem is you don't have a clue on what the website will be about. It is in this kind of situations when it is necessary to ask oneself one and only one question: What am I building this site for? The answer will yield valuable results. Is it to sell a product or service? Is it to provide a free (*) service? Is it to give information to a general public? Is it focused on a small / specific group of people? etc. Full List of Questions. The answers you give yourself will determine pretty much all about your site, at this stage and also in later ones.

Once you have the answer on what you are doing this for you can start pondering the many possibilities of accomplishing it. Throughout this text I will use as an example the creation of this site since it was built using this method. This step is also true for this site; when I was just starting to define the idea of a new site I was confronted with the issue that I had already built many of the ideas I had on different projects, so I was left out dry and with no hope of building something new. Then I remembered to ask myself the most important question: What am I building this for? The answer was simple, I wanted to give valuable information to the general public, and I wanted to put my gathered knowledge out in the open for everyone to use and profit on it. With the biggest issue sorted out (at least halfway through) I could start thinking through other more specific issues.
