3. Define Site Map (Flow Chart).

The next step to take is the creation of the Site Map. This is to be taken like a flow chart on how your visitors will see and navigate through your site. At this stage you will define the different sections that will exist as well as the routes to access them. In here you design as well all the Admin only features, like stat counting or site logging. A few key points will be highlighted here. There has to be an index or starter page, this is your home page, the first one any visitor will see. In the next step we will see what kind of content this page should have, but for now just remember that this page has to exist and that it is very important. There also has to be a contact page where the visitors can find a way to contact the webmaster as well as any other important staff member. If the site offers any kind of downloads (demos, shareware, MP3, videos, multimedia files, etc) there has to be a Downloads page. If the site offers many products or services that are alike, group them under a Products / Services page. If the site has any photo gallery or screenshots section, put it under a Gallery / Screenshots page. If the site offers any kind of links, put them in the Links page. It is important that there is an 'About' page where the main purpose of the site is stated. If it is necessary, don't forget to include a Terms of Service / Disclaimer page where all the legal info is stated. Also remember (though not completely related to this step) to put the authors name and copyright for every piece of content you include in the site, even if it's yours, don't forget to put your name there.

As I first started developing the idea for this site, I imagined first, the homepage, with the recent news and a link to a news archive, a 'links' page, an 'about' page, the so important 'contact' page and finally, the most important page, the 'sections', from where all content would spring. Initially there would be only one category, the computing category, but in time that placeholder would develop into many sections. So that way the first level was outlined, then some inside pages were thought of, like the mail form and the contributions one. Of course this was only the first sketch of the site; even then I knew that much more work would be needed to develop the site into its true shape.
