6. Define the Site's colors.

Now it's time to start planning the actual design of the site. By design I mean what your site will look like, how the content will be arranged, what additional shapes or helper content holders you will use, etcetera. The first step is to choose your site's colors. This is your color palette from which all the design will be built on. You should start by picking one color. The criteria here can be of two fashions: your personal preferences and the message you want to send with the color. In your personal preferences I cannot be of much help, but for the message it can be of great help reading on Color Meanings. Once you have that color, you need to choose a second one that combines with the first one. This can be a similar color (of the same hue) with more or less saturation and more or less brightness. There is another option, it is called a complementary color, and a color's complementary is the color that lies in front of it in the Color Wheel. For more information on choosing harmonic colors read on Color Theory.

Color Wheel

Up to this point you should have two colors. The next step would be to choose your palette from this colors, that is, find the color's Hex Codes for the colors you chose and find also the Hex Codes for two colors lighter and two colors darker for the two colors you first chose. That means you will have about 10 colors now. Be sure to have a correlation list of the colors' codes and their actual representation. If you want, black and white can be part of this palette too. When you are finished you should have from 8 (if you chose fewer shades) to 12 colors. Take in account that these will be your only colors from now on, except for images or logos; everything should fall into one of this colors. /Examples of good palette use/.
