7. Define the Site's theme (if applicable).

This step might be optional for some sites, since not all sites have a defined theme beyond its colors. But if it is important for your site this is the time to choose the general theme of it. An example could be a singer or a group of singers for a music site. The selection of the theme is important because it is based on that theme that the images that are placed inside the layout will be chosen. So following the last example, if the theme is about a singer, the images that will be placed in the banners and the headings will be of that singer. There are several tricks to make the images combine smoothly with the site's colors. The first one is to choose images which main color is similar to one of your site's colors. This way no edition is needed and the image will fit just fine. The second one is to use a color overlay (this is made with an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop); in this method you will overlay one of the site's colors to make the image blend properly with the rest of the site. A third method, that emerges from the last one is to, in addition of using the color overlay, to make the image either semi-transparent or to have a feathered border. This way the image will blend seamlessly to the background. This last method can be especially good for backdrops and backgrounds.

It is important at this point to remember not to overdo the imaging. By this it is meant that you should not clutter your layout with too many images, remember that elegance relies on simplicity. Many times less is actually more. It is important as well to know that even if an image is not completely sharpened or even if it is a little blurry it may serve well for the purpose of the website. If the main focus of a banner is the text and not the image, the image can be oversized and blurred out to give an interesting effect that doesn't draw away too much focus from the intended text.
