Multicolumn Layouts and Web Grids. 4. Not "standard compliant" grids. There is one more theory point to be made before we dive right into the practical approach. Up until now we have seen grids of different sizes and different rows or columns compositions, but we are going to forget all about them for now and take a leap of faith into the uncharted area. As it was said before there is no limit or rule on how a grid should be built, this includes merging or deleting elements, even nesting elements one inside the other. As we will see there are different methods for constructing the grids, but all of them allow you to define it in the best way you see suitable. So you might want to start with a single headline element at the top that includes both corners and the center. Then you work down into the left column, then a wide content column then a thin content column and then the right column. Then, at the bottom you have just the bottom left corner and the footer that includes the bottom right corner. As you try to picture this irrational grid I tell you that it is completely possible to build it that way and even more that it is a proven design that works very well. But that's enough theory for now, if you are still reading and you have the urge to learn how to build these layouts, read along as I show you some techniques. |
